Shared Milestones
What I love most about the web is its potential to connect me to my friends as they reflect and work through ideas that are also important to me. Today, among so many other examples, the web gave me a picture of what it's like to be a homeschooling dad. I noticed Jason throw a link into twitter to a blog post he'd just finished writing. The post is the sort of writing, but also the sort of experience I most desire for myself: authentic shared experiences of life and learning between a parent and child. I've had many similar experiences myself, and read lots more, like this one that Luke wrote.
What makes it even more special to me is that I am collecting more and more friends like this who are also homeschooling dads. It's a singular experience I don't get to talk about much, since very few of the people I know or work with do it. I'm not interested in trying to convert the world, or say that everyone should do this. I'm satisfied to just have it be what we do. But every once in a while, it's so important to connect with others who have made the same choice, and to do so in a way that inspires like Jason's post did for me.
